Better Security At Our Public Library

E-mail Print PDF
To Bernie Oliver and/or whoever wrote the article about "Better Security At Our Public Library" and the Washington Irving Library to contact me. I would like to address the concerns mentioned in the story, including the actions by the Office of Public Safety following our meeting and how we can help with this project.

Washington Corridor Update

E-mail Print PDF

I asked for the councilman's daily calendar from 1/1/8 to 4/1/09 and found no development meetings scheduled. I was sequestered by the councilman to meet him personally to pick up the calendar packet. He wanted to know what he had done to "piss me off". I said "nothing". "It was our hope with your connections as former Speaker of The House for CA you could attract development money to West Adams." He did share he invited Trader Joe's new buisness people to his office and pitched a store at Washington Square but they said "We are never going to put a store in THIS nieghborhood" and the councilman showed them the door. I asked if he ran with this biggoted position to the press and he replied "no". Does Trader Joe's hate black people? I have stopped shopping there since April of this year. It takes money to attract money! Bob Jones (RIP) told me you either have to have money or know money to get development done. He was and always be right!

Residents Try To Help Library

E-mail Print PDF

The Washington Irving Library located at 4117 W. Washington Blvd. has the proud distinction of being the City’s first modern state of the art library built in the new millennium.

With its multi- media computer workstations and spacious community meeting room, the library truly is a resource for quality learning and cultural events. Unfortunately, for the past few years, the library has been challenged by thefts, vandalism and disorderly conduct from juveniles. The Friends of the Washington Irving Library and Public Safety Committee for the lOth District have responded by coming together to form a committee to address these serious problems. The senior librarian expressed her concerns at community meetings and asked the Office of Public Safety, School Police and LAPD to intervene and control the situation. Our group felt it was critical to provide a safe environment for patrons and employees of the library.

Hostage City: Free LA from the Union Stranglehold

E-mail Print PDF

When I was a young journalist, I got involved in leading my union and fighting for empowerment of journalists in the newsroom, for equal pay for women and for the integrity of the news report.

It was a time when corporations were taking over newspapers and eliminating competition which is the key to a free press. I led a strike against Rupert Murdoch when I lived in Australia and he started fabricating the news during the constitutional crisis that followed the ousting of the Labor Party government in 1975.

The Development of Washington Corridor

E-mail Print PDF

In April of 2000 I sent an e-mail to Mayor Riordan inquiring about the redevelopment of Washington Boulevard.

Riordan had just sold off the last farm land between Ventura and Los Angeles County, making Los Angeles County officially land locked from the Pacific Ocean to San Bernardino County and creating a perfect scenario for redeveloping the inner city.  His commissioner sent me a terse reply stating “Washington Blvd.was not a target for redevelopment from Mayor Riordan’s office.”
